The Santa Fe Rail Trail route is a first for the Santa Fe Century -- a 20 mile all-dirt out and back ride! The entire route is on multi-use paths closed to motorized vehicles. Riders will climb slightly for 3 miles on the Spur Trail, before joining the Santa Fe Rail Trail for 7 more miles until the turn-around at the second crossing at Avenida Eldorado. A food stop will be located at the turn-around. Riders will then reverse the route, ending with a faster finish on the Spur Trail. The total elevation gain for the route is 907 feet. The Santa Fe Rail Trail parallels the old Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Rail Line and features wide open views and lots of short fun rollers. This route is excellent for mountain and cylcocross/gravel bikes. Thirty two mm or wider tires are highly recommended (any mountain bike tire is more than adequate). The entire route is wide enough for two-way traffic and is comprised of an improved dirt surface. Riders should control speed in the corners and expect other trail users; there are some areas where the visibility is limited.
Although all riders may start at their pleasure, we suggest that Santa Fe Rail Trail riders start between 9:00 and 10:00am. Allowing approximately 3 hours for beginning riders, this will place you back at the finish line between noon and 1:00pm. The venue will be alive with music, refreshments and lunch at the beer garden. Also, the Gran Fondo, Medio Fondo, and 50 mile riders will be rolling in. So time your start so that your finish will be a part of the festivities!!
Gear and Equipment
Each rider needs a bike with tires of 32 mm or wider in good mechanical condition with enough gears to climb short, steep hills. ASTM approved helmets are mandatory. In addition, each cyclist must carry a spare tube, a patch kit, pump or CO2 cartridges and basic tools. Each rider should carry extra water. All riders should ride single file and be attentive to two-way traffic on the path. Please be courteous to other cyclists and pedestrians. Use a bell or call out when passing, and stay to the right!
There is one Food Stop with snacks, fresh fruit, energy drink and water at the crossing of Avenida Eldorado with the Santa Fe Rail Trail at mile 10. There will be no gear valet and no photos taken for the Rail Trail ride.
