The Santa Fe Century was started in 1985 by the Sangre de Cristo Bicycle Club as a way to raise money for racer uniforms and entry fees. After a few years, Willard Chilcott (1928-2018) took over the leadership of the Santa Fe Century. Willard directed the Century for more than three decades until poor health threatened to end the Century. Willard’s good friend, Charlie Loesch stepped up and volunteered to direct the Century. Willard had a passion for outdoor adventure and a drive to share it with friends and strangers alike. His energy was boundless. The Santa Fe Century remains the first century ride every spring for cyclists in the Southwest and beyond. During Willard’s tenure as director, the Century grew from ridership under one hundred to over 2,000. Sadly, Charlie passed away in 2016 and Willard in 2018. Their memories live on in the event and the smiles on the faces of happy riders as they reach the finish line.
